Phelps County Habitat for Humanity

History of Phelps County Habitat for Humanity

Phelps County Habitat for Humanity is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God's love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Phelps County Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.

Phelps County Habitat for Humanity began in October in 1995. Affiliate status with Habitat for Humanity International was gained on October 1, 1996. Phelps County Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, (501(c)(3)) organization, with a mission to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness in Phelps County, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through our work, we bring together the community and families in need. This in turn, benefits everyone in Phelps County.

Phelps County Habitat for Humanity has built nine houses in Phelps County since forming in 1995. Construction on our first house was started in October of 1997.  Ella Brown and her family moved in January of 1998. The house is located on Holloway Street in Rolla, Missouri. Our second house on Holloway Street was completed in 1999.

The next two houses were built on Elm Street in St. James.  Construction on the fifth house on Camelot Drive, Rolla was started in the fall of 2005.   Ed and Melissa Weldon moved into this house in February 2006.  This was followed by construction on our third lot on Elm Street in St. James.  Nancy Williams and her son Brendon took ownership and moved into their new home in December 2007. In 2009 construction on our last lot in St. James was completed in that same year.  Shawnda Robison and her son Cash moved into this home in October 2009.

Our two most recent houses were built on Maplewood Drive in Rolla. Tiffany Beard and her two daughters moved into the eighth house in January 2012. Our ninth homeowner moved in to her house in April 2015.

Our next house will also be built on Maplewood Drive in Rolla.  Amanda Crawford and her three children should move into their new home in the middle of 2018!   See photos of construction of all of our houses.
